Storms on U.S. Plains stir memories of the "Dust Bowl"

LIBERAL, Kansas (Reuters) - Real estate agent Mark Faulkner recalls a day in early November when he was putting up a sign near Ulysses, Kansas, in 60-miles-per-hour winds that blew up blinding dust clouds.

"There were places you could not see, it was blowing so hard," Faulkner said.

Residents of the Great Plains over the last year or so have experienced storms reminiscent of the 1930s Dust Bowl. Experts say the new storms have been brought on by a combination of historic drought, a dwindling Ogallala Aquifer underground water supply, climate change and government farm programs.

Nearly 62 percent of the United States was gripped by drought, as of December 25, and "exceptional" drought enveloped parts of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

There is no relief in sight for the Great Plains at least through the winter, according to Drought Monitor forecasts, which could portend more dust clouds.

A wave of dust storms during the 1930s crippled agriculture over a vast area of the Great Plains and led to an exodus of people, many to California, dramatized in John Steinbeck's novel "The Grapes of Wrath."

While few people believe it could get that bad again, the new storms have some experts worried that similar conditions - if not the catastrophic environmental disaster of the 1930s - are returning to parts of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas and Colorado.

"I hope we don't talk ourselves into complacency with easy assumptions that a Dust Bowl could never happen again," said Craig Cox, agriculture director for the Environmental Working Group, a national conservation group that supports converting more tilled soil to grassland. "Instead, we should do what it takes to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Satellite images on December 19 showed a dust storm stretching over an area of 150 miles from extreme southwestern Oklahoma across the Panhandle of Texas around Lubbock to extreme eastern New Mexico, said Jody James, National Weather Service meteorologist in Lubbock. Visibility was reduced to half a mile in places, stoked by high winds, he said. At least one person was killed and more than a dozen injured in car crashes.

"I definitely think these dust storms will become more common until we get more measurable precipitation," James said.

'DIRTY 30S'

The Great Plains is a flat, semi-arid, area with few trees, where vast herds of buffalo once thrived on native grasses. Settlers plowed up most of the grassland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to create the wheat-growing breadbasket of the United States, encouraged by high commodity prices and free "homestead" land from the government.

The era known as the "Dirty 30s" - chronicled by Ken Burns in a Public Broadcasting Service documentary that aired in November - was when a 1930s drought gripped the Great Plains and winds carried away exposed soil in massive dust clouds.

Bill Fitzgerald, 87, a farmer near Sublette, Kansas, remembers "Black Sunday" on April 14, 1935, when a clear, sunny day in southwest Kansas turned black as night by mid afternoon because of a massive cloud of dust that swept from Nebraska to the Texas panhandle.

"My older brother and I were in my dad's 1927 or '28 Chevy truck a mile north and a mile west of the house and we saw it rolling in," Fitzgerald said. "It was about 10 p.m. when it cleared enough for us to go home."

Farming practices have vastly improved since the 1930s. Farmers now leave plant remnants on the top of the soil and less soil is exposed, to preserve moisture and prevent erosion.

Irrigation beginning in the 1940s from the Ogallala aquifer, a huge network of water under the Great Plains, also made land less vulnerable to dust storms.

DRYING UP

But the Ogallala aquifer is drying up after years of drawing out more water than was replenished.

Many farmers have had to drill deeper wells to find water. Others are giving up on irrigation altogether, which means they can no longer grow crops of high-yielding and lucrative corn. They will instead grow wheat, cotton or grain sorghum on dry land, which depends completely on natural precipitation in an area that typically gets 20 inches of rain a year or less.

Near Sublette, Kansas, farmer Gail Wright said he would probably give up irrigating two square miles of his land and would plant wheat and grain sorghum instead of corn because of the diminishing aquifer. Drilling deeper wells would cost $120,000 each, Wright said.

"When we drilled those wells in the 1960s and 70s, we were doing 1,500 or 1,600 gallons per minute," said Wright. "Now, they are down to anywhere from 400 to 600 gallons per minute. We probably pumped out 200 feet of water."

Another farmer in Sublette, 79-year-old Lawrence Withers, whose family farms land his grandfather settled in 1887, is resigned to a future without irrigation.

"We have pumped 170 feet off the aquifer, that's gone. There's just a little tick of water at the bottom," he said.

The Ogallala supplies water to 176,000 square miles (456,000 square km) of land in parts of eight states from the Texas panhandle to southern South Dakota. That amounts to about 27 percent of all irrigated land in the nation, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The volume of water in the aquifer stood at about 2.9 billion acre feet in 2009, a decline of about 9 percent since 1950, according to the Geological Survey. About two-and-a-half times as much water was drawn out in the 14 years ended 2009 as during the prior 15-year period, data shows.

The water may run out in 25 years or less in parts of Texas, Oklahoma and southwest Kansas, although in other areas it has 50 to 200 years left, according to the Geological Survey.

Rationing has been imposed on irrigation in the region but it may be too little too late.

"It's a situation where across the Plains the demand far exceeds the annual recharge," said Mark Rude, executive director of the Southwest Kansas Groundwater Management District.

RECORD DROUGHT

The worst drought in decades has exacerbated the situation. The semi-arid area around Lubbock, which typically gets about 19 inches of rain a year, received less than 6 inches in 2011, the lowest ever recorded. This year was better but still far below normal at 12.5 inches, meteorologist James said.

Climate change is also having an impact on the region, said atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe, co-director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

"It is definitely hotter in the summer and drier in the summer because of climate change," she said.

The average annual temperature in Lubbock has increased by one full degree over the last decade, according to National Weather Service data, and the average amount of rainfall has fallen during summer months by about .50 inch over the decade.

Some say government policies are making things worse.

Federal government subsidized crop insurance pays farmers whether they produce a crop or not, encouraging farmers to plant even in a drought year.

Another subsidized U.S. government program that pays farmers to take sensitive marginal land out of crop production and put it into grassland is gradually shrinking.

In a possible case of history repeating itself, high commodity prices are encouraging farmers to break up the land and plant crops when the 10-year conservation contracts with the government expire, said environmentalist Cox. This is similar to what happened in the 1920s when vast areas of grassland were plowed up.

The government also has imposed restrictions on how much land can go into conservation reserves to save money at a time of massive U.S. budget deficits, he said.

The amount of land in conservation reserves has declined by more than 2.3 million acres over the last five years in five states of the Great Plains - Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico, according to U.S. Agriculture Department data.

If most of that land is plowed up for crops it could lead to more dust storms in the future.

"I think you are probably going to see increased erosion if that happens," said Richard Zartman, Chairman of the Plant and Soil Science Department at Texas Tech, adding that it was unlikely to get as bad as the Dust Bowl days.

AFC Playoff Matchups 2012 - Business Insider

The AFC playoffs are ready to go.

Here are the seeds:

  1. Denver Broncos?(bye)
  2. New England Patriots?(bye)
  3. Houston Texans
  4. Baltimore Ravens
  5. Indianapolis Colts
  6. Cincinnati Bengals

So the Texans will play the Bengals this week in Houston, and the Ravens will play the Colts in Baltimore.

Not the juiciest match-ups in the world. But the Broncos and Patriots getting the 1-2 seeds means that we could potentially see a Brady vs. Manning AFC Championship Game down the road, which is plenty juicy. Also, as commenter "Avocado" points out, Peyton Manning could play the Colts in round two if they beat Baltimore and Houston beats Cincy.

Another intriguing note: the Denver Broncos got the #1 seed with a 13-3 record. But they're only 2-3 against playoff teams, so they're a big mystery.

Check out the NFC picture here. >

Personal finance to-do list for year's end | GoErie.com/Erie Times ...

As the calendar ticks toward Dec. 31, here are some last-minute, year-end tips recommended by financial professionals:

- Do your donations: If you want a charitable deduction on this year's taxes, you need to write that donation check by Dec. 31. Donations made on a credit card by Dec. 31 are deductible for 2012, even if you pay the Visa bill in 2013.

- Max out the 401(k): It's a gift to yourself -- a little retirement cushion. If you haven't maxed out the contribution to your 401(k) at work, do so now. For 2012, the annual contribution limit is $17,000.

- Ditto for your IRA: To boost your retirement savings, don't forget your IRA contributions. In 2012, the maximum contribution to IRAs and Roth IRAs is the smaller of $5,000 or your taxable compensation for the year. For those age 50 or older, the limit is $6,000.

- "Moving" donations: If you're donating a car, boat or plane to a charitable organization at year-end, the IRS reminds that you can only deduct the fair market amount when the car is sold by the charity. This applies to vehicle deductions valued at $500 or more.

- Spend those FSA dollars: If you have a Flexible Spending Account at work to cover health/dependent care costs, now's the time to make sure you've spent all of those tax-free dollars you squirreled away. FSA accounts are use-it-or-lose-it; you don't want to let that money slip away.

AP Exclusive: Documents raise doubts in Nazi probe

In this May 1944 photo provided by Yad Vashem Photo Archives, Jewish women and children deported from Hungary, separated from the men, line up for selection on the selection platform at Auschwitz camp in Birkenau, Poland. Johann ?Hans? Breyer, 87, of Philadelphia admits he was a guard at Auschwitz, but says he was never in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the part of the death camp used as a killing machine for Jews. World-War II-era documents obtained by The Associated Press indicate otherwise. Those files are now in the hands of German authorities, and could provide the legal basis for charging Breyer as an accessory to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the Nazi death camp. (AP Photo/Yad Vashem Photo Archives)

This image provided by the U.S. Department of Justice shows a copy of a World War II-era record of Johann "Hans" Breyer's employment as an Auschwitz camp guard. The document casts doubt on the 87-year-old Philadelphia man's story that he served only at Auschwitz I, a smaller camp largely for prisoners used as slave laborers, and never entered Auschwitz II, also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, where about 90 percent of the 1.1 to 1.5 million Jews and others were killed in the camp. The files are now in the hands of German authorities, and could provide the legal basis for charging Breyer as an accessory to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the Nazi death camp. (AP Photo/U.S. Department of Justice)

BERLIN (AP) ? The case of an 87-year-old Philadelphia man accused by Germany of serving as an SS guard at Auschwitz has largely centered on whether he was stationed at the part of the death camp used as a killing machine for Jews.

Johann "Hans" Breyer ? while admitting he was an Auschwitz guard ? insists he was never there.

World-War II-era documents obtained by The Associated Press indicate otherwise.

The files provided by the U.S. Department of Justice in response to an AP request are now in the hands of German authorities, and could provide the legal basis for charging him as an accessory to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the Nazi death camp.

The retired toolmaker told the AP in September, when German authorities confirmed he was under investigation, that he was always at Auschwitz I, a smaller camp used largely for slave labor, and never entered Auschwitz II, also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, where about 90 percent of the 1.1 to 1.5 million Jews and others killed in the camp were murdered.

The U.S. Justice Department documents tell a different story. One SS administrative document specifically notes that Breyer was an SS guard at Auschwitz II. Another indicates he served with a unit of the SS Totenkopf, or "death's head," that was assigned to guard Birkenau.

Kurt Schrimm, the head of the special German prosecutors' office responsible for investigating Nazi-era crimes, which has recommended charges be brought against Breyer in Germany, would not comment on specific pieces of evidence. But he said his office felt there was a strong enough evidence to prove that Breyer served in Birkenau.

"American authorities have been very cooperative in this case and have turned over a lot of evidence," he said.

Breyer did not respond to requests for comment; his attorney, Dennis Boyle, said that he was aware of the documents but would not comment on their possible significance. "We are continuing our investigation and have no comment at this time," Boyle said.

The U.S. Department of Justice used the documents as part of its unsuccessful decade-long legal efforts to have Breyer stripped of his American citizenship and deported. The U.S. case centered upon issues such as whether Breyer had lied on his immigration papers and whether he had obtained U.S. citizenship through his American-born mother. That legal saga ended in 2003, with a ruling that allowed him to stay in the United States, mainly on the grounds that he had joined the SS as a minor and could therefore not be held legally responsible for participation in it.

The German investigation, by contrast, tries to prove that Breyer was a death camp guard, and the documents are now being used to support that case.

The dossier is now with prosecutors in the town of Weiden, near where Breyer last lived in Germany. The prosecutors are reviewing whether there is enough evidence to charge him with accessory to the murder of least 344,000 Jews as Schrimm's office has recommended, and have him extradited from the U.S.

For decades after the war, German prosecutors were only been able to convict former Nazi guards if they could find evidence of a specific crime. But with the case of former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, the legal thinking changed: Prosecutors were able to successfully argue that evidence of service as a death camp guard alone was enough to convict a suspect of accessory to murder.

Demjanjuk always denied being a guard anywhere. He died in March while appealing his conviction on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder. Breyer, however, acknowledges that he served with SS Totenkopf guard units ? although not the one that served at Birkenau ? and was stationed both at Buchenwald, a concentration camp located in Germany, and Auschwitz.

"I didn't kill anybody, I didn't rape anybody ? and I don't even have a traffic ticket here," he told the AP in an interview at his home in northeastern Philadelphia in September. "I didn't do anything wrong."

He said he was aware of what was going on inside the death camp, but did not witness it himself. "We could only see the outside, the gates," he said. The interview was the only one Breyer has given to the media.

Breyer was born in 1925 in what was then Czechoslovakia to an ethnic German father and an American mother, Katharina, who was born in Philadelphia. Slovakia became a separate state in 1939 under the influence of Nazi Germany. In 1942, the Waffen SS embarked on a drive to recruit ethnic Germans there. Breyer joined at age 17 and was called up in 1943.

In testimony in 2002, he told the U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania that he had been sent to Auschwitz from Buchenwald in May 1944, then was given leave in August and returned home. He testified that he stayed in hiding in and around his home until the Soviet army closed in.

According to Breyer, the town's mayor provided him a letter asking for authorities to excuse his desertion because he had been needed on the family farm. Breyer testified that the letter worked with Nazi authorities, and that he was able to eventually rejoin his unit fighting outside Berlin in the final weeks of the war.

The documents, however, call his testimony into question, suggesting he was at Auschwitz through the rest of 1944 and into 1945, which would have meant he was there during the time some 426,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz, 320,000 of whom went directly into the gas chambers in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

A form from SS administrative authorities, filled out on Jan. 17, 1945 in Pressburg, which today is Bratislava, Slovakia, indicates that the previous day Breyer was there in person and applied for ? and was granted ? financial assistance for his parents' farm while he was away serving in the SS.

And it notes that Breyer at the time of the application was based at "Auschwitz 2."

In a 2002 case in the United States, the judge questioned the trustworthiness of the document ? noting among other things that the birthdates of both of Breyer's parents were wrong, and the size of his family farm was written down as double what it actually was. In his testimony, Breyer suggested the document was "a fraud."

But a court expert testified there was no evidence of a forgery. And U.S. federal prosecutors noted that Breyer's date of birth, date of induction into the SS, profession, parents' names and hometown are all correct. They also cited Breyer's first interrogation in 1991, when he told investigators he had gone home after "they granted me vacation end January '45" ? which fits with the timeline of the document.

In the current German case, Thomas Walther, a former prosecutor in Schrimm's office, said it was also plausible to think that Breyer would have made his parents seem older, and his farm larger, in order to bolster the case for receiving assistance.

If nothing else, he said, the document and other evidence raise enough suspicion for prosecutors to file charges.

"Where this evidence fits has to be decided at trial, regardless of what the U.S. judge said the German court needs to decide," said Walther, who is now in private practice and represents several family members of Jewish victims at Auschwitz who have joined the investigation as co-plaintiffs as allowed under German law.

Weiden prosecutor Gerhard Heindl, who is heading the current investigation, said he could not comment on any evidence.

Another document, an April 26, 1944 letter to the SS administration in Pressburg from the leader of the pro-Nazi Slovakian "Deutsche Partei," makes a case to have Breyer excused from his duties to help on his family's farm, noting that he was assigned at the time to the 8th Company of the SS Totenkopf in Auschwitz.

The 8th Company was stationed at Auschwitz II during the time Breyer is alleged to have been there, according to camp orders cited by Raul Hilberg in his book "The Destruction of the European Jews."

A U.S. Army intelligence file on Breyer, obtained by the AP, from a 1951 immigration background check also lists him as being with the SS Totenkopf in Auschwitz as late as Dec. 29, 1944 ? four months after he said he deserted. The Army Investigative Records Repository file was obtained by the AP from the National Archives through a Freedom of Information Act request.

"Clearly we can't say what the result will be at the end of a long presentation of evidence to a court ? that's not our job," Walther said. "But our contention is with this evidence the state prosecutors must file charges."

Home prices rose in October, survey shows

19 hrs.

Single-family home prices rose in October for nine months in a row, reinforcing the view the domestic real estate market is improving and should bolster the economy in 2013, a closely watched survey showed on Wednesday.?

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.?

"Looking over this report, and considering other data on housing starts and sales, it is clear that the housing recovery is gathering strength," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.?

While record low mortgage rates and modest job growth should keep the housing recovery on track, analysts cautioned home prices face downward pressure from a likely pickup in the sales of foreclosed and distressed properties and reduced buying investors and speculators.?

Prices in the 20 cities rose 4.3 percent year over year, beating expectations for a rise of 4.0 percent.?

Las Vegas posted the biggest monthly rise on a seasonally adjusted basis at 2.4 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent increase in San Diego, the latest Case-Shiller data showed.?

"Higher year-over-year price gains plus strong performances in the Southwest and California, regions that suffered during the housing bust, confirm that housing is now contributing to the economy," Blitzer said.?

Housing contributed 10 percent to the overall U.S. economic growth in the third quarter, while the sector represented less than 3 percent of gross domestic product, he said.?

Last week, the government said U.S. GDP expanded at a stronger-than-expected 3.1 percent annualized pace in the third quarter.?

Excluding seasonal factors, however, home prices in 12 of the 20 cities fell in October from September as home values tend to decline in fall and winter, Blitzer said.?

Chicago experienced the largest non-seasonally adjusted decline at 1.5 percent, followed by a 1.4 percent fall in Boston.?

Autopsy-based study examines prevalence of atherosclerosis among U.S. service members

Dec. 25, 2012 ? Among deployed U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries between 2001-2011 and underwent autopsies, the prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis was 8.5 percent, with factors associated with a higher prevalence of the disease including older age, lower educational level and prior diagnoses of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity, according to a study in the December 26 issue of JAMA.

"An early breakthrough in the understanding of the natural history of atherosclerotic heart disease was achieved in 1953, when Enos and colleagues at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology reported a 77 percent prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis among U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War. By demonstrating anatomically that atherosclerosis affected a large proportion of young individuals without clinical evidence of heart disease, their study revolutionized the understanding of the onset and progression of cardiovascular disease. A follow-up report in the Vietnam War era, along with a number of autopsy studies in the civilian population provided additional evidence that the onset of atherosclerosis may occur at an early age," according to background information in the article. Since the publication of these studies, health policies have been implemented to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and smoking.

Bryant J. Webber, M.D., of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md., and colleagues conducted a study to assess the prevalence of atherosclerosis in the U.S. armed forces. The study included all U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn between October 2001 and August 2011 and whose cardiovascular autopsy reports were available at the time of data collection in January 2012. Prevalence of atherosclerosis was analyzed by various demographic characteristics and medical history. Classifications of coronary atherosclerosis severity were determined prior to data analysis and designed to provide consistency with previous military studies: minimal (fatty streaking only), moderate (10 percent -- 49 percent luminal [interior of the vessel] narrowing of one or more vessels), and severe (50 percent or more narrowing of one or more vessels). Of the 3,832 service members included in the analysis, the average age was 26 years.

The overall prevalence of coronary or aortic atherosclerosis was 12.1 percent. The prevalence of any coronary atherosclerosis was 8.5 percent; severe coronary atherosclerosis was present in 2.3 percent, moderate in 4.7 percent, and minimal in 1.5 percent. The researchers found that age consistently produced the strongest association with prevalent atherosclerosis. Service members with atherosclerosis (average age, 30.5) were approximately 5 years older than those without; those 40 years of age and older had about 7 times the prevalence of disease as compared with those 24 years of age and younger (45.9 percent vs. 6.6 percent)

Lower education level and higher military entrance body mass index (BMI) were significantly associated with prevalent atherosclerosis, after adjusting for age. As compared with those who completed high school or less, those who completed at least some college had lower prevalence of disease. As compared with those with a normal BMI on military entrance, those with a BMI in the overweight or obese range had a significantly higher prevalence of atherosclerosis

The authors also found that age-adjusted atherosclerosis prevalence was associated with several diagnoses. As compared with those with no major cardiovascular risk factor diagnoses, those with a diagnosis of dyslipidemia (50.0 percent vs. 11.1 percent), hypertension (43.6 percent vs. 11.1 percent), or obesity (22.3 percent vs. 11.1 percent) had a significantly higher prevalence of atherosclerosis.

The researchers note that the prevalence rates found in this study demonstrate a decline from the rates of 77 percent noted in the Korean War and 45 percent in the Vietnam War, but add that targets for further improvement remain.

"Military and civilian health care systems should continue to help patients reduce their cardiovascular risk factors, beginning in childhood and continuing throughout adult life. Despite remarkable progress in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and other developed nations, and even small improvements in the prevalence of smoking and other risk factors may reduce death rates further and prolong healthy lives."

Editorial: Combating the Epidemic of Heart Disease

Daniel Levy, M.D., of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Bethesda, Md., comments on the findings of this study in an accompanying editorial.

"Autopsy studies have demonstrated that coronary disease begins at a young age. Consequently, primary prevention campaigns to address obesity and related risks should begin in childhood. Declines in cardiovascular disease risk factors have almost certainly contributed to the observed reductions in prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis, incidence of clinical atherosclerotic disease, and deaths from heart disease. Although age-adjusted heart disease death rates have declined by 72 percent since their peak during the Vietnam War years, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. The national battle against heart disease is not over; increasing rates of obesity and diabetes signal a need to engage earlier and with greater intensity in a campaign of pre-emption and prevention.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Choose ...

It is important to take the time to learn how to properly utilize internet promotion. Read this article to learn more about internet marketing and get started with your online business.

Always stay on top of what your internet promotion competition is doing. There is competition in Website marketing, no matter how tiny you think your niche is.

You must take your website marketing seriously and devote time to research in order to succeed. Pick a mentor that you trust and admire online. Savvy internet marketers often offer free consultations or promotional service bundles to customers. You should thoroughly research your endeavor before deciding it is something you will stick with over the long haul. Keep in mind that this might take time to start, but know that it is well worth your time.

TIP! Make yourself an expert in any topic on your site. This is very important because it gives you a great deal of credibility and makes a strong impression on your potential customers.

Personalize whatever you put out to your email contacts. Your current and prospective customers probably are already annoyed at the bulk emails they receive. Consider this: don?t you dislike getting bulk mail from strangers? If you make your emails more personal, this should give you a leg up on your competition when sending emails.

Use social media, such as Twitter or Facebook in your Website marketing strategy. Social media sites will keep you and your target audience in constant contact, allowing you to send information quickly and easily. Just be wary of over-promoting. Be sure to layer in original and more conversational posts along with your more promotional style messages.

TIP! Always keep an eye on exactly what kind of content you are giving your customers when you use the internet to promote your business. Individualize your content, and make it relevant.

Review your business website from the perspective of a customer. Is your site user friendly? Does it offer enjoyment to the reader? Ordering products should be quick, easy and secure. Make sure that you maximize the quality and functionality of your site to keep your customers.

When you use email as a regular form of communication with your customers, make sure you change your links on a regular basis. If you information is redundant you will likely bore your customers instead of encouraging them to purchase products. Your email readers will be less likely to lose interest if you keep changing up the links in your emails.

Promote your business through other popular sites online. Making this investment will pay off in the form of valuable exposure for your company or brand. For the most bang for your buck, choose a page with plenty of traffic so that as many people as possible see your company name.

TIP! A time tested strategy to maintain an edge in business is to always look at what your competitors are doing. Check out other websites in your field to discover what they could improve upon.

Stay away from spamming at all costs. While it may seem efficient to post a bunch of comments on sites, those posts won?t have the positive effect you desire. If you try to use that method you are more likely to have people turn away from your business than to seek more information.

Create interactive features such as a chat area on your website for customers. People will identify with your brand if they can discuss things they enjoy with people who have similar interests. A forum gives you the opportunity to learn from your customers while allowing users to make important business contacts.

Be certain to make use of textual emphasis techniques as you plan your site?s layout. Augment the power of a term or phrase by changing it to italics, underlined, or bold text. Using emphasis on certain words will help you clarify what message you are wanting to get across to your customers.

TIP! Be sure to have customer reviews and testimonials included on your site. People enjoy reading what others have written about any product they are considering.

For any business website that sells products in any volume at all, third-party transaction security is vital. There are a lot of services that are considered ?trusted?. McAffee, VeriSign, etc. will safeguard the financial exposure of both vendor and customer. While these systems are not always very cheap, they are a critical component of safe and secure online transactions.

Closely evaluate the actions of your top competitors and analyze that data to formulate your own plans. Picture yourself as a customer on their site, and if you can see yourself wanting to buy, they are doing it right. Use the best ideas and fold it into your own strategy.

If you want to be seen as an authority in your field, compile a glossary of terms. This can help your customers figure out what they need to know, making them more likely to visit your site again. As a highly searchable page, a glossary is sure to drive significant new traffic to your site.

TIP! Your site may be marketed as some kind of social marketing or club instead of your business. This will keep customers coming back, rather than visiting once and leaving immediately.

Blogging can be an effective way to increase traffic to your website. Just remember that you need regular infusions of fresh content to make a blog effective. Visitors are more likely to revisit your site if they know they will always be reading up-to-date, useful information.

Try your hand at mobile marketing. This gives you a chance to give visitors to your site a way to get alerts via text about discounts or new products. This is a new method of advertising that also will boost your advertising campaigns in Web marketing.

The tag you choose for your site should clearly define you. Many people will either be enticed further or steered away by what they read in your website?s tag. Using language that isn?t natural and relevant can be the biggest mistake you make when creating this tag.

TIP! If you want to build trust and to sell products, you need to offer a warranty or some type of guarantee. Such policies will put your customers at ease and give you a respectable and trusted persona.

Sell your product using positive motivation. Talk about how much your readers can improve their lives by buying your product. Encouraging your audience to use your product to follow their dreams will make them much more likely to buy.

It is very helpful to have a 500 error page. This type of error page will be seen by customers if something goes wrong with your website. Genetic error messages just display a message that the connection timed out. Instead, inform your visitors that you are working on a fix to their problem using a more creative webpage message that fits the format of your site.

It would take extensive articles and books to explain every aspect of Online marketing, yet all successful businesses need to start somewhere. Even those who are experienced at Internet promotion are looking for new techniques.

TIP! Always have a budge and do not overspend on advertising. Not all forms of marketing online require an investment.

Self Improvement Techniques: A Guide To A Better Life - Health Care

Most people wish they had a slightly different life. For some, the shows itself in their personal life whereas with others, they prefer to concentrate on improving their professional careers. Anyone intrigued by the idea of self improvement will find the insights of this article quite useful.

Come up with a little pep talk for yourself. Write a list of each of your good points and attributes on an index card. Take it with you everywhere you go, and go over each quality when you feel the need. Another great idea is to recite the list while filming yourself, so that you can view the footage regularly. Is there a benefit?

Speaking to a therapist or religious official can really help you out. Not only have they been trained to deal in personal growth, their experience in these issues is what makes them a good choice to speak with. They?ll eagerly listen, analyze what?s going on and help you find enlightenment. Talking these issues through with someone who is a professional will help you be healthier and happier in the long term.

Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. This is the best way to be able to set a course of direction to get there. If you do not know this, you are not ready to begin personal development.

Read literature that is focused on self improvement. A good book can provide you with the information that you need to get started on your journey toward a new you. Pick out a book that has gotten good reviews because there are some books about self improvement that are not written very well.

When trying to achieve personal development, failures can dampen and hurt an individual?s ego and self esteem. Approach your failures as opportunities to learn. Failure helps you figure out what you are good at and what needs improvement. When you look at it that way, failure should inspire pride in your ability to discover a new piece in your puzzle.

To keep from saying something you may regret later, count from one to ten before speaking. This gives you time to get your emotions under control. Take a cleansing breath and focus on something positive. Picture yourself remaining calm and saying only what you will not regret.

If you hope to advance your state of knowledge regarding self improvement, it can help to show a little humility. As you acknowledge that you are small and insignificant in this universe, the more that you realize your lack of knowledge. Once you absorb this fact, you will have a desire for further knowledge and understanding.

Make the important aspects of your life the focus of how you live. You will have much more inner peace if you just choose to focus on things that matter to you.

For many, there is a vague feeling of discontentment and an urge to facilitate change, but they lack the knowledge needed to begin. While a great result is only going to be achieved by you putting in the effort, here are some handy hints to get you on the road to success. Stay motivated by keeping these tips in mind at all times.

Bid to Deport Piers Morgan Gains Fame

A petition asking President Obama to deport CNN anchor Piers Morgan gathered more than 33,000 signatures in just three days.

The petition on the White House's "We the People" website posted Friday has crossed the 25,000 threshold needed to solicit a response from President Obama. But unlike the petitions to reduce gun violence that Obama addressed last week, this one isn't likely to receive a favorable response.

The petition takes aim at Morgan for his impassioned defense of proposed gun control legislation on air this week. It accuses him of launching "a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment."

But according to immigration attorney Mark Schifanelli, it would take more than expressing an opinion on television to get Morgan booted out of the country.

The Department of Homeland Security would have the power to start a deportation process on Morgan if it was warranted, Schifanelli said, but even then, there's no guarantee Morgan wouldn't win the right to stay in an appeals process.

"He's got certain rights," Schifanelli told ABC News Monday. "Even as a foreign national in the United States, he's afforded various rights under national security law and due process."

What's more, Morgan's supposed attack on the Second Amendment is likely protected by the First Amendment. His speech would have to present "immediate danger" in order to break the law. Schifanelli said it's unlikely Morgan's defense of gun restrictions would meet that requirement.

But perhaps the best reason the president wouldn't deport Morgan for advocating stricter gun laws on television is that he would be guilty of the same crime.

In a televised address on Wednesday, President Obama expressed support for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban and urged Congress to take "meaningful action" to prevent further gun violence.

The petition against Morgan isn't the first wacky request to receive substantial support. A bid for Texas to secede from the union and form an independent nation has received 121,784 electronic signatures and is still waiting for a White House response.
