Will the Super Bowl save energy?

The Super Bowl may be an unlikely energy saver:?Residential electricity use dropped as much as 5 percent below average levels during last year's Super Bowl, according to a new study.

By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / January 31, 2013

A customer looks for a large screen television while shopping at a Best Buy store in Elk Grove, Calif. The total decrease in US home electricity use during the Super Bowl is greater than three times the amount of energy consumed by all the TVs showing the Super Bowl, according to a study by Opower.

That might explain why residential electricity use dropped as much as 5 percent below average levels during last year's Super Bowl, according to a study by Opower, a company that develops energy-monitoring tools for utility companies.

The Arlington, Va., firm analyzed electricity usage across 145,000 US households on Feb. 5, 2012, comparing the data to similar Sundays in January and February 2012.

"[W]hen the game kicks off," the study found, "electricity usage plummets."

The Super Bowl, Opower's theory goes, distracts us from the kilowatt-chugging chores we typically reserve for Sundays. Instead of doing laundry, running the?vacuum?cleaner or cooking dinner, we're glued to our big-screen TVs and stuffing our faces with pizza and buffalo wings. ?

Military getting ready to bring back the airship

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? The massive blimp-like aircraft flies but just barely, hovering only a dozen feet off a military hangar floor during flight testing south of Los Angeles.

Still, the fact that the hulking Aeroscraft could fly for just a few minutes represents a step forward in aviation, according to the engineers who developed it. The Department of Defense and NASA have invested $35 million in the prototype because of its potential to one day carry more cargo than any other aircraft to disaster zones and forward military bases.

"I realized that I put a little dot in the line of aviation history. A little dot for something that has never been demonstrated before, now it's feasible," said flight control engineer Munir Jojo-Verge.

The airship is undergoing testing this month at Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, and must go through several more rounds of flight testing before it could be used in a disaster zone or anywhere else. The first major flight test took place Jan. 3.

The biggest challenge for engineers is making sure the airship will be able to withstand high winds and other extreme weather conditions, Jojo-Verge said.

Worldwide Aeros, the company that developed the aircraft, said it also must secure more funding for the next round of flight testing, but is hopeful the Defense Department and others will step in again as investors.

The company says the cargo airship's potential to carry more cargo more efficiently than ever before would provide the U.S. military with an advantage on the battlefield and greater capacity to save more lives during natural disasters.

The lighter-than-air vehicle is not a blimp or a zeppelin because it has a rigid structure made out of ultra-light carbon fiber and aluminum underneath its high-tech Mylar skin. Inside, balloons hold the helium that gives the vehicle lift. Unlike hydrogen, the gas used in the Hindenburg airship that crashed in 1937, helium is not flammable.

The airship functions like a submarine, releasing air to rise and taking in air to descend, said Aeros mechanical engineer Tim Kenny. It can take off vertically, like a helicopter, then change its buoyancy to become heavier than air for landing and unloading.

"It allows the vehicle to set down on the ground. And then when we want to become lighter than air, we release that air and then the vehicle floats and we can allow it to take off," Kenny said.

The project has set abuzz the old hangars at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin. The structures were built to hold blimps during World War II. Now workers zip around in cherry-pickers, and the airship's silvery surface shines against the warm tones of the aging wood of the walls.

"You could take this vehicle and go to destinations that have been destroyed, where there's no ports, no runways, stuff like that. This vehicle could go in there, offload the cargo even if there's no infrastructure, no landing site for it to land on, this vehicle can unload its whole payload," said Kenny.

Next, Aeros wants to build a full-size 450-foot-long vehicle that can carry 66 tons of payload.

Writebox (for iPad)

If you're searching for a great note-taking app for your iPad, and having a distraction-free writing environment is one of your needs, Writebox ($1.99) offers a clean interface and connectivity with Dropbox for storage. Distraction-free editors offer a highly pared down experience, ditching formatting and other features in the name of simplicity, so don't expect Writebox to come with any bells and whistles. Price-wise, it's on par with the ad-free version of PlainText ($1.99, free for ad supported version), although Writebox comes with a couple of value-adds.

For starters, it also works as a Web app and Chrome app (free), so you can always get at your notes from any browser when you have an Internet connection. Second, although it does maintain a distraction-free view, it adds a tiny character count at the bottom of the right corner of the screen, should you need to keep an eye on length. But, similar to PlainText, Writebox only integrates with Dropbox for additional storage, and both apps would benefit from expanding their reach to other cloud storage solution providers.

Getting Started
When you first visit buy and install the Writebox iPad app, you'll be asked to sign into your Dropbox account. To use Writebox, you don't need a Writebox account of any kind (simplicity at its finest), but when you connect to Dropbox, the app does require total access to all your folders. There's no way to restrict it to only certain folders.

The app's interface is extraordinarily clean. A small top-line menu bar has two buttons on the left (a button that opens the storage pane, and a new file button) and three on the right (two circling arrows that reverts an active file to its last saved state, a share, and a sync button. The share button curiously hides a few features that have nothing to do with sharing; more on that in a moment.

Other than that, you'll see a big, blank screen, where you can type. When you have an active document, you'll see two more features, both of which I like quite a bit. One is a set of arrows for moving the cursor forward or backward one space at a time, for those of us who have a hard time manipulating the cursor using the press-and-hold magnifying glass feature in iOS. The second addition is a small running character count in the bottom right of the screen. In the Web app, you also see line and word counts, and can suppress all the number if you don't like to see them. In the iPad app, you only see characters, and there's no way to turn it off.

Customization and Use
Customization options, which are confusingly hidden behind the share button, are minimal, but some are quite necessary, such as being able to change the colors of the text and background, increase or decrease the point size, and adjust the typeface. You can't change the amount of space between lines in the iPad app, although you can in the Web app.

From the storage pane button in Writebox, you can navigate your entire Dropbox folder structure and save new text files anywhere you'd like. Among existing files, only .txt formatted documents will appear, though, as it's the only file type supported by the simple app.

When you get to typing and editing in Writebox, the storage navigation pane disappears to leave you with a very basic editing area, the idea being you won't be distracted from anything in the app and can focus on writing. Press the sync button, and your changes will be pushed to Dropbox.

Writebox for Simply Writing
For a $1.99 app, Writebox for iPad is an inexpensive text-editing tool that keeps distractions out of sight. Writebox is only available for iOS, Chrome, and the Web at the moment, although the latter two work well and save documents reliably from virtually any Internet-enabled platform. While some iPad owners might be peeved to pay for an app that's otherwise free, at least the price is reasonable and in line with other apps of its ilk. Writebox certainly holds its own as a distraction-free text editor, bearing in mind that it's already quite a niche product. It would be a much more useful app if it supported more syncing and storage solutions beyond Dropbox.

ABC: Barbara Walters is out of the hospital

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? ABC says Barbara Walters is out of the hospital and recovering from chicken pox at home.

ABC said Tuesday that the 83-year-old host on "The View" is resting comfortably and "getting stronger." There was no indication of when she might return to work.

Walters was hospitalized after falling and cutting her head at a pre-inaugural party in Washington on Jan. 19. The news veteran later was diagnosed with chicken pox, which typically hits people when they are children.

The disease can be serious in older people because of the possibility of complications like pneumonia.

Florida women frighten off intruder by chanting ?Jesus?

Derick Lee, after being arrested by police (Lake City Police Department)If you ask the 15 women inside Jacquie Hagler?s house what happened, they?ll tell you it?s simple: Jesus scared a would be thief out of the Florida woman?s home.

At first, those gathered at Hagler?s house for a jewelry party thought the intruder was simply part of an elaborate gag, using a ?water gun? to tease the Florida women.

"It's only a water gun," one attendee reportedly said, while brushing away the firearm allegedly brandished by Derick Lee, who entered the home wearing a ski mask and bandana across his face.

Witnesses say Lee then held the gun to the woman?s head and announced, "I'm not joking, I'm going to shoot someone, give me your money." He even showed the women some of the bullets loaded into his gun before they could be convinced the robbery attempt was real.

But what Lee didn?t know was that he was outgunned by the jewelry party attendees ? at least spiritually speaking.

"When I realized what was going on, I stood up and said, 'In the name of Jesus, get out of my house now,'? Hagler told WJXT-TV. And he said, 'I'm going to shoot someone.' And I said it again, real boldly," Hagler continued. "Everybody started chanting, 'Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,' and he did a quick scan of the room, and ran out the door as fast as he could go."

Lee, 24, was arrested Friday night at his home and identified by several of the jewelry party attendees during a police photo lineup. He?s currently being held on a $200,000 bond.

I believe he saw angels,? Hagler said in a separate interview with the Christian Post. ?I think he saw who was on our side, and he just turned around. The look on his face was just, like, astonishment. He was totally captivated by whatever he saw. He just turned around and ran out the door.?

Cities affect temperatures for thousands of miles

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Even if you live more than 1,000 miles from the nearest large city, it could be affecting your weather.

In a new study that shows the extent to which human activities are influencing the atmosphere, scientists have concluded that the heat generated by everyday activities in metropolitan areas alters the character of the jet stream and other major atmospheric systems. This affects temperatures across thousands of miles, significantly warming some areas and cooling others, according to the study this week in Nature Climate Change.

The extra "waste heat" generated from buildings, cars, and other sources in major Northern Hemisphere urban areas causes winter warming across large areas of northern North America and northern Asia. Temperatures in some remote areas increase by as much as 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the research by scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography; University of California, San Diego; Florida State University; and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

At the same time, the changes to atmospheric circulation caused by the waste heat cool areas of Europe by as much as 1 degree C (1.8 degrees F), with much of the temperature decrease occurring in the fall.

The net effect on global mean temperatures is nearly negligible -- an average increase worldwide of just 0.01 degrees C (about 0.02 degrees F). This is because the total human-produced waste heat is only about 0.3 percent of the heat transported across higher latitudes by atmospheric and oceanic circulations.

However, the noticeable impact on regional temperatures may explain why some regions are experiencing more winter warming than projected by climate computer models, the researchers conclude. They suggest that models be adjusted to take the influence of waste heat into account.

"The burning of fossil fuel not only emits greenhouse gases but also directly affects temperatures because of heat that escapes from sources like buildings and cars," says NCAR scientist Aixue Hu, a co-author of the study. "Although much of this waste heat is concentrated in large cities, it can change atmospheric patterns in a way that raises or lowers temperatures across considerable distances."

Distinct from urban heat island effect

The researchers stressed that the effect of waste heat is distinct from the so-called urban heat island effect. Such islands are mainly a function of the heat collected and re-radiated by pavement, buildings, and other urban features, whereas the new study examines the heat produced directly through transportation, heating and cooling units, and other activities.

The study, "Energy consumption and the unexplained winter warming over northern Asia and North America," appeared online January 27. It was funded by the National Science Foundation, NCAR's sponsor, as well as the Department of Energy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Hu, along with lead author Guang Zhang of Scripps and Ming Cai of Florida State University, analyzed the energy consumption -- from heating buildings to powering vehicles -- that generates waste heat release. The world's total energy consumption in 2006 was equivalent to a constant-use rate of 16 terawatts (1 terawatt, or TW, equals 1 trillion watts). Of that, an average rate of 6.7 TW was consumed in 86 metropolitan areas in the Northern Hemisphere.

Using a computer model of the atmosphere, the authors found that the influence of this waste heat can widen the jet stream.

"What we found is that energy use from multiple urban areas collectively can warm the atmosphere remotely, thousands of miles away from the energy consumption regions," Zhang says. "This is accomplished through atmospheric circulation change."

The release of waste heat is different from energy that is naturally distributed in the atmosphere, the researchers noted. The largest source of heat, solar energy, warms Earth's surface and atmospheric circulations redistribute that energy from one region to another. Human energy consumption distributes energy that had lain dormant and sequestered for millions of years, mostly in the form of oil or coal.

Though the amount of human-generated energy is a small portion of that transported by nature, it is highly concentrated in urban areas. In the Northern Hemisphere, many of those urban areas lie directly under major atmospheric troughs and jet streams.

"The world's most populated and energy-intensive metropolitan areas are along the east and west coasts of the North American and Eurasian continents, underneath the most prominent atmospheric circulation troughs and ridges," Cai says. "The release of this concentrated waste energy causes the noticeable interruption to the normal atmospheric circulation systems above, leading to remote surface temperature changes far away from the regions where waste heat is generated."

Refugees again, Palestinians flee Syria's war

EIN EL-HILWEH, Lebanon (AP) ? When Syrian warplanes bombed a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus last December, Umm Sami rounded up her three sons, shut the windows and locked the doors so they could neither hear nor heed the call to arms by rebels and pro-government gunmen fighting in the streets.

Then she told her sons they were leaving their home in the Yarmouk refugee camp in the Syrian capital for neighboring Lebanon, where they would wait out Syria's civil war.

"There will be no more martyrs for Palestine in my family," Umm Sami said, who only gave her nickname for fear of reprisals. "This war is a Syrian problem."

Now safe in Lebanon, the 45-year-old widow and her family have joined thousands of other Palestinian refugees who have found shelter in the country since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad erupted nearly two years ago. The conflict has left more than 2 million people internally displaced, and pushed 650,000 more to seek refuge abroad.

Umm Sami's resolve to keep her sons out of the fight in Syria ties into a deep-rooted sentiment among a generation of Palestinian refugees who say they are fed up with being dragged into the region's conflicts on a promise of getting their own state.

The Palestinian exodus from Syria has also revived a decades-old debate over the refugees' right of return to their homes that are now in Israel. That has added another layer of complexity to a conflict already loaded with sectarian and ethnic overtones that have spilled over into neighboring countries, raising fears of a regional war.

Palestinians living in Arab countries ? including the half-million refugees in Syria ? are descendants of the hundreds of thousands who fled or were driven from their homes in the war that followed Israel's creation in 1948. Having scattered across the Middle East since then, Palestinians consistently have found themselves in the middle of the region's conflicts.

After the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam Hussein, hundreds of Palestinians were killed as the Sunni and Shiite militias fought for dominance of the country. Iraq's Shiite majority saw Saddam, who like most Palestinians was a Sunni Muslim, as a patron of the stateless Palestinians, granting them rights the dictator denied his own citizens because they were of the rival sect.

About 1,000 Palestinians fled the 2004-07 sectarian bloodshed in Baghdad, living in a refugee camp near the Syrian border before being resettled in third countries.

During Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, Palestinians played a major role, fighting alongside Muslim militiamen against Christian forces.

Umm Sami, who was born in a refugee camp in Lebanon before the war, was twice forced to flee the fighting, most notably in 1982 when her family escaped the Sabra and Chatilla camps during the notorious massacre of Palestinians there by Christian militias.

She would eventually bury her father, two brothers and her husband ? all fallen fighters ? before leaving for Syria and settling with her four sons in Yarmouk, one of nine Palestinian camps in Syria.

Her youngest son died in a traffic accident while serving in the Palestinian unit of the Syrian army just weeks before the anti-Assad revolt started in March 2011. None of her other sons joined the revolution, she said, because "they don't want to die."

Unlike in Lebanon, where Palestinians are cramped into notoriously lawless camps, banned from all but the most menial professions and barred from owning property, Palestinians in Syria are well integrated and enjoy full citizenship rights, except for the right to vote.

But when the uprising against Assad erupted in the southern province of Daraa in March 2011, some Palestinians living in a camp there joined in the peaceful protests. When the fighting spread to the northern city of Aleppo in last summer, some took up arms against the regime.

In Damascus, most stayed on the sidelines, but as the civil war reached Yarmouk late last year, a densely populated residential area just 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the heart of the capital, most residents backed the rebels. Some groups, however, such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, opted to fight alongside Assad's troops.

Palestinian officials say more than 700 Palestinians have been killed in the Yarmouk fighting. Most of the camp's 150,000 inhabitants have fled, according to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. Some of them have found safe haven in areas of Damascus and other Syrian cities, but most have escaped to camps in Lebanon.

"We go from catastrophe to catastrophe, from refugee camp to refugee camp, but at least we are alive," Umm Sami said in Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp, near the southern port city of Sidon. She and her sons, who are all in their 20s and university graduates, fled Yarmouk with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind a two-bedroom apartment and jobs that paid the bills.

Now, they are jobless in Lebanon, officially barred from legal employment, and left to live off help from relatives and handouts from the camp's mosques.

Ein en-Hilweh normally houses 65,000 people, but since mid-December, when a flood of refugees from Yarmouk started arriving, the population has steadily grown by several hundred a day, putting a further strain on resources.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he asked U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon last month to seek Israeli permission to bring Palestinians caught in Syria's civil war to their homeland. Last week, he said that Israel agreed to allow 150,000 Palestinians refugees from Syrian into the West Bank and Gaza ? as long as they relinquished the right of return to what is now Israel. Abbas said he refused.

With no end to the Syria conflict in sight, residents of Ein el-Hilweh have started building a camp within a refugee camp for their compatriots escaping the violence across the border.

They've converted the camp's children's library into housing for dozens of families. Reading rooms, offices, hallways and even bathrooms have been partitioned with makeshift walls, boards and even blankets as families try to carve out space to cook, eat and sleep.

In the library's front yard, a new structure is being built to house at least 10 more families.

"We do what we can to help and find them a home, because they are not going back to Syria soon," said Sheik Jamal Khatab, who oversees the registration of refugees and distribution of aid.

The biggest challenge facing the Palestinian refugees, Khatab said, is not to be dragged into the Syrian civil war ? on either side. He also warned that the hardship awaiting Palestinians after the war ends will be tougher than the one they have been living as stateless people.

"It's in our interest not to interfere in this conflict, even though the Syrian regime is a tyrannical regime," he said. "We are not Syrians, and any side that will win this war will consider us enemies."

Scandal-hit Monte Paschi seeks new investor to revive bank

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena is seeking a financial investor to help revive the ailing lender and will remove a current cap on voting rights to help raise 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion), its chairman said.

"I would like to have a long-term financial investor," Alessandro Profumo told Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore in an interview published on Sunday. "Nationality is not a problem. The important thing is that it believes in our project".

Late on Saturday the Bank of Italy gave its approval to Monte Paschi's request for 3.9 billion euros ($5.3 billion) of state loans, which Profumo said would be issued by February.

The central bank's backing was the final stage required to free up the financial help for Italy's third-biggest lender, which this week revealed loss-making derivatives trades that could cost it about 720 million euros.

In October, investors cleared a 1 billion euro share issue as part of its business plan, which Profumo said would be launched by the end of 2015.

Shareholders in the world's oldest bank on Friday approved two additional capital boosting measures for a combined 6.5 billion euros to be used in case the bank is not able to pay back the loans and interest with cash.

Profumo said he was confident the bank would generate enough cash to pay back the state bailout over the next five years and may not need to turn to investors to raise the 6.5 billion euros, which he described "theoretical" guarantees.

"We believe in this. The objective is to return to profits already during the course of this year," he said.

The bank will remove its current 4 percent cap to voting rights before launching the 1 billion euro cash call, he added. The move would encourage investors who could end up with more than 4 percent stakes to participate.

The scandal around opaque Monte Paschi trades is widening fast and Italian media have reported that public prosecutors are investigating a large number of derivatives contracts.

The issue has shot to the centre of the campaign for next month's national election and has prompted questions about how the deals, which were conducted between 2006 and 2009 and involved Japanese bank Nomura and Deutsche Bank, could have been hidden from regulators.

Monte Paschi was already under investigation over its 9 billion euro cash acquisition of smaller lender Antonveneta from Spain's Santander in 2007.

In an interview with La Repubblica daily on Sunday, Monte Paschi Chief Executive Fabrizio Viola said he had no evidence at this time that any crime had been committed, but the bank would not hesitate to protect its interests by taking legal action should any crime be ascertained by judges. (AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

What is Risk Management? | Business 2 Community

What is Risk Management? image risk management 300x198Risk management. It?s a term that gets mentioned a lot here on YIQ. But what does it actually mean? Knowing what risk management is and how it works are two different things. There are a set of processes a risk management specialist must go through in order to establish the risk to a particular business. We?ll be outlining what risk management is and how risk is identified, for all those who?ve ever wondered: what is risk management?

Identification

One of the first things a risk management specialist does is to establish context. The risk for a construction site is going to be different than the risk in a classroom, for example. Once context is established the risk evaluation process can be planned and the types of risk inherent in the sector being evaluated can be narrowed down. Once context has been established, specific risks can then be identified. The risk specialist must identify where potential problems may begin. Once the source of a potential problem is know it can then be assessed and planned for.

Assessment

When risks have been established, each risk must be assessed based upon its likelihood and potential severity. Asset valuation is also an important part of the assessment process as it influences the priority of each risk. The probability of certain events can be difficult to measure, as can the exact value of assets. As a result, a lot of risk management is based on educated estimates and whatever statistics are available. At the end of the assessment process the priority and potential impact of each risk should be decided.

Plan

After the risks have been assessed and the possibility of them happening has been accepted, a plan must be made to avoid them. This may mean installing an extra fire extinguisher on every floor of a building or a company improving their anti-virus software. The risk management process won?t rid a business of all risk, but it well get it to a manageable level.

Management

Once risk has been established and a plan has been made, it must be managed. Risk for a business is constantly evolving so it needs to be monitored on a regular basis. A resolution cannot be applied and then forgotten about. New risks will emerge and they will require assessment and a prevention plan of their own.

Risk management is a circular process. Once risk has been identified, assessed and planned for, the process continues and begins over again. Being prepared for the hazards that can befall a business is of great importance. It would be a shame to put a lot of work into risk management for one year only to sit back and then watch it all fall apart in the next.

Trial under way in LA hip joint replacement suit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A California jury heard opening statements Friday from attorneys in a lawsuit over whether a now-withdrawn hip replacement device from medical giant Johnson & Johnson subsidiary was defective.

The lawsuit in Los Angeles claims the New Brunswick, N.J.-based company knowingly marketed the faulty hip implant, leaving thousands of people with crippling problems or needing replacement surgeries.

The fraud and negligence suit is the first of thousands of similar suits to reach trial in the United States that involve an all-metal ball-and-socket hip joint that was pulled from the market two years ago.

The lawyer for a man who had his hip device removed after metal allegedly flaked off into his body showed jurors pictures of the surgery in which black material could be seen in the patient's hip socket.

Attorney Michael Kelly also played a segment of a doctor's audio deposition in which he said he feared that if the material wasn't removed, the patient, Loren Kransky, would have died. The pieces of metal were causing a form of metal poisoning, he said.

Kransky, a former North Dakota prison guard, sought hip replacement to relieve arthritic pain. He received the implant in 2007 and has since has had it replaced. He listened to opening statements Friday from a front row seat.

A lawyer for Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary, DePuy Orthopedics Inc., which manufactured the metal implant, said Friday that the 64-year-old Kransky had many pre-existing medical ailments. Attorney Alexander Calfo presented a list of 16 major diseases, including kidney cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and vascular disease as well as exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.

"Mr. Kransky did not get worse because of the (implant) and did not get better when it was removed," he said.

He added, "Hip surgery is not perfect. No material to this very day has proven to be perfect."

He said that the metal implant had been designed to improve on plastic and ceramic implants.

The artificial hip socket was sold for eight years to some 35,000 people in the U.S. and more than 90,000 people worldwide. Johnson & Johnson stopped making the product in 2009 and recalled it the next year.

However, documents unsealed in the court case last week indicated that Johnson & Johnson officials were aware of problems with the device at least as far back as 2008.

Also, according to a deposition from a DePuy official, a 2011 company review of a patient registry concluded that more than a third of the implants were expected to fail within five years of their implantation.

Johnson & Johnson has put aside around $1 billion to deal with the costs of the recall and lawsuits.

Last year, British experts at the world's biggest artificial joint registry said doctors should stop using metal-on-metal hip replacements after a study found that, after five years, about 6 percent of people who had used them needed surgery to fix or replace them.

That compares with just 1.7 to 2.3 percent of people who had ceramic or plastic joints.

Kelly said he will ask the jury to assess punitive damages at the end of the trial "to send a message to the defendants who failed to share with doctors what they knew."

He said that when DePuy Orthopedics learned the device they manufactured might be defective, "They acted in a manner that was indifferent."

Why Is Affiliate Marketing So Popular For Home Based Businesses ...

Affiliate Marketing For Home Based BusinessWhen you think of running a home based business it probably conjures up images of stacking boxes in your garage and spare rooms overflowing with stock.

But more and more home based businesses are appearing and they don?t hold stock or even produce a product themselves.

They are the silent masses doing affiliate marketing from home.

Affiliate Marketing For Home Based Business

Affiliate marketing is basically like being a commission only sales person for another company, but you get the opportunity to not only sell one product, but many across a number of networks.

That?s why this method of home based businesses is really taking off. You don?t have to hold large amounts of stock in your garage which not only takes up space but also ties up money until it?s all sold.

No stock required

You don?t have stock because you?re selling products produced by other companies.

There are hundreds of retailers that offer an affiliate commission for helping them sell a product. Products can be physical goods like products from Amazon who have give affiliates a cut of any sales they help bring to Amazon, or they can be digital goods like software, audio files, online courses and more.

No product or service of your own required

Another great thing about affiliate marketing is that you don?t have to have a product or service yourself. You can make quite a good living in your home based business selling other people?s products.

Don?t get me wrong, it can take a little time to ramp up to a full time income with affiliate marketing, but the opportunity is there and it means you don?t have to invest lots of money into product development.

Cheap to startup

While we?re on the topic of investing money into your business, affiliate marketing businesses are among the cheapest to start.

There is no product or service development costs and you can run it from home which will cut down on office costs. The bare minimum you?ll need to invest in is a computer and internet connection, but we also can?t help but mention it helps to invest in an affiliate link management tool if you?re running a number of websites.

Getting Started

Many people are looking into this business model because of the attractive commissions and low start up costs. Our advice is to get started today.

Your income from affiliate marketing might be low at first, but it will increase with time and dedication and as your knowledge about the business increases.

Investing in tools like ThirstyAffiliates will help you optimize your campaigns and get your ahead faster.

How To Start An Affiliate Marketing Business

As mentioned before and if you have the option, start your affiliate marketing business as a part time venture. It?s unlikely you?ll make it to a full time income straight away, but it?s something you can grow into.

Starting can be as simple as finding products and services that you have used yourself and checking if they have an affiliate program.

This is exactly how I started in the game by advertising the web hosting service one of my websites was running on. For each new customer I referred I was able to get $65 in commissions.

True, that?s nothing huge to write home about, but to this day that one website brings in a few hundred dollars a month which was enough to spark my interest in affiliate marketing.

Starting A Website

Once you figure out what product you?re going to promote you need to figure out how you will direct people to it.

Most people start a website around the product or a group of products that are all similar.

We recommend using the?WordPress?blogging/CMS software?for creating your website which is something you can install with a couple of clicks using web hosts like Bluehost.

If you?re using WordPress you can also take advantage of our tool, ThirstyAffiliates. It lets you organise all of your affiliate links in one place which is an absolute must if you have more than a handful of affiliate links.

Directing Traffic

The final piece of the puzzle is directing traffic to your affiliate marketing website. This is something that stumps a lot of affiliate marketers.

There?s basically two options, you can pay for traffic or attract traffic naturally from search engines, social media and other websites.

This is a topic for a whole other blog post in itself which we?re going to post about soon (make sure you subscribe over there in the sidebar).

Best of luck!

While it all seems quite easy running an affiliate marketing business from home, it?s actually a tough business to succeed in. But I guess that depends on what your definition of success is.

It might be that you?re just trying to find some extra beer money each month, in which case a casual approach to affiliate marketing will be enough. Start a website you?re passionate about, blog about it prolifically, get search traffic and find products to promote to your audience.

If you?re getting into it with a view to expanding it and maybe going full time one day you might need to be more methodical, but essentially the formula is similar. Start a website around a topic you know has good potential for promoting products via affiliate marketing and attract traffic to that site.

Whichever way you go, make sure you check out our tool, I?m sure it will help you on your journey in affiliate marketing and be sure to sign up to our blog in the sidebar there for more posts like this one.

How To Prepare Yourself For Business Networking Events

Preparing yourself for business networking events is easier said than done. Many people completely misunderstand the point of networking events and have little idea why they are attending them apart from hunting for business, or what they should be doing in order to enhance their credibility at the events.

Over the past year, how many business networking events did you attend?

Were the events you attended helpful?

Out of all the people you met at those events, how many of them are you still in contact with right now?

Working The Room

Working the room is exactly as it sounds.? Work the crowd, whether individually or as groups, and produce results through finding good contacts and opportunities. You do this by spending your time interacting; talking with people, listening to people and answering any questions people may have about your industry or your business. Likewise, ask them questions about their business and their industry. Make the topic of conversation about them as this is smarter and more strategic to networking then talking about yourself the entire conversation.

There are different reasons why people attend business networking events.? Some attend so that they can meet specific people. Others take part to meet people who are in the same industry as they are, and some people attend to meet potential clients. However, remember that a networking event is not a hunting ground and if you go in with the attitude ?let me sell my services to see how much business I can pick up? then you won?t get very far.

Preparing yourself for business networking events

There are also people who attend networking events not only for business, but to identify with other people and see where socialising will lead. Possibly to make new friends, to see if there is a potential job vacancy at other businesses or the opposite, to recruit or headhunt brilliant candidates to join your team. Whatever the reason for attending a networking event, you must prepare yourself so that you will produce the positive results that you seek.

6 Tips To Prepare Yourself For Business Networking Events

Establish The Mindset Of A Networker

Give yourself a few minutes to tap into the right mindset. To do this, focus on your goals. You are going out there to connect with new people. You want to leave those new people with a good, lasting impression. You are also going out there to find people who can help you and people you can help. Have an open mind and show a genuine interest in the people you meet. Use your smile to break the ice. Be mindful of mutual benefits and figure out how you can help other people first, and then they will naturally help you in return.

Having the networker mindset will help you remain focused on your goals and guide your intentions perfectly when you approach people. By this, you?re making yourself attractive to others.

Be Knowledgeable Of The Event

Before you attend an event, you need to make sure you know what? kind of event it is and be knowledgeable of the theme. Here is a list of things you should figure out prior to attending:

- The Key Topic

- Who The Keynote Speakers Are (if any)

- What They Will Discuss

- The Industries That Will Be Discussed

- The Crowd The Event Will Draw

By figuring out this information beforehand, you will know what to expect at the event and who will be there. This will help you assess what you will be able to gain and how you can potentially help other people who attend the event.

Who Will Be There

This is an important tip. You should find out who or which company representatives will be at the event. For many business networking events, you can actually find out the complete list of people attending. You may find the list of attendees at the event?s website or by calling the organising team. If the event has set up a ?meet up??page then this can provide a complete list. There are also networking event apps like ?Bizzabo??that can reveal this information for you if it?s being used by the organisers.

After you have seen the list of attendees, make a note of specific people that you would like to talk to at the event. Research the attendees through searching on Google? and social platforms like Linked In where you can learn more about the people before you meet them. This valuable information will help you approach them in confidence and talk about what interests them which in turn, will leave a lasting impression of you.

When you attend a networking event with people in mind, and you have gathered information about those people, you will be able to break into conversation and form connections instantaneously. This is a great way to maximise the effectiveness of networking.

Be Memorable

You should aim to attract people by being visible. Firstly, you need to wear nice clothes that adhere to the dress code of the event. Secondly, why not add something to your outfit that makes you standout such as carrying a unique, vintage notebook, wearing an outstanding tie that speaks character or even a lapel pin which can be a conversation starter. These little additions will draw people to you and give them something to remember you by.

Business people at a business networking group

When you dress well, you exhibit self-respect. You also show that you respect your position and the position of others. The additional accessories like the vintage notebook makes you stand out and people may find that interesting enough to strike up a conversation.

Prepare Your Introduction

The first impression you make on someone is very important. Before the event, prepare your introduction pitch. Use these tips to help you prepare:

  1. Focus your pitch on who you are and what you are looking for.
  2. Also, express your personality. Add some emotion and passion to your personal story, and try to be less informative and monotonous.
  3. Repeat your name twice in your introduction and at least one more time during your discussion.

Use this format:??Hello, my name is John.? ?Stop for a second and continue with, ?John Smith.? Then in the conversation insert your name, here is an example: ?A great piece of advice I received from him was when he said, ?John??.?

This will reflect your confidence and express your personality. This will help you communicate your message effectively and also, leave little chance of the person forgetting your name as they may be a little hesitant on asking for it again.

Do Not Forget Your Business Cards

I firmly believe that the more prepared you are for an event, the better you will be able to set good foundations. The people you meet at business networking events could be some of your best connections with whom you can build long term relationships that are mutually beneficial.

Business people at business networking events

So, you really want to keep business cards at hand and plenty of them. During the conversation, exchange business cards and actually make note on one side where you met the person. If for some reason you don?t have any cards, don?t worry take their card and promise them you?ll be in touch.

I am honestly interested in what you do to prepare for networking events. Are there any benefits you feel you have gained from your preparedness?

Please share your experiences and ideas in the comments below!

Frigid temperatures continue as ice hits South

Timothy A. Clary / AFP - Getty Images

A man photographs the fountain at Bryant Park in New York on Friday as the arctic air has turned the fountain into an ice sculpture.

By Andrew Mach, Staff Writer, NBC News

Capping off a brutal week of frigid conditions and subzero wind chills, residents across much of the country on Friday were still experiencing some of the coldest temperatures in years ? with southern states getting a rare icy blast.

Peak temperatures from the Northeast to the Midwest were slated to range from single digits to the 30s, and forecasters said freezing air temperatures and the chance of precipitation could mean snow in both regions.

"This is actually quite an impressive mass of cold air,"?Richard Castro, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service told NBCChicago.com.

By mid-afternoon on Friday, Pennsylvania was feeling the first of a "widespread storm, impacting the entire state," said state's transportation department spokesman Steve Chizmar.

Snow was falling over most of the state, and forecasters predicted a total of 1 to 4 inches through Saturday morning, while transportation department crews stayed busy plowing and salting the roads.

Hundreds of schools in the state dismissed classes early Friday.

Only a light dusting, if any accumulation, was expected in New York City, where real-feel temperatures were below zero Friday morning, NBCNewYork.com reported.

In the Midwest, one of the first snowfalls of the season in Chicago created a few slick spots on the roads Friday morning, causing at least a dozen accidents, including an eight-vehicle crash, NBCChicago.com reported. Only minor injuries had been reported.

Though little snow accumulated it was still record breaking. The 1.1 inches recorded Friday morning broke the city?s 335-day stretch of no more than an inch of snow accumulation in one day.

The National Weather Service had winter weather advisories in effect for the eastern seaboard from North Carolina to southern New Jersey, and issued blizzard warnings for northern Georgia.

Parts of Kentucky were reporting as much as half inch of ice accumulation,?Weather.com?reported. Slick roads in the southeast of the state were making driving hazardous,?causing more than 100 accidents in Pulaski County alone, it said.

Tennessee was also slick with ice in the east, and reported some power outages, while freezing rain caused a number of school systems in central and southern Kentucky to cancel classes, according to WLEX-TV.

Because cold temperatures can be dangerous, officials advised residents to heed cold-weather tips, including wearing gloves, wearing a mouth covering to protect the lungs from bitter cold air, layering loose-fitting, warm clothing and wearing a hat to retain body heat.

Animal advocates also urged pet owners to only take elderly dogs, puppies and short-haired dogs outside when it is absolutely necessary. If a dog whines frequently or keeps lifting its paws up while on a walk, it may need boots. Cat owners should keep their animals inside at all times in such bitter cold, NBCChicago.com reported.

The forecast for next week called for some relief from the arctic temperatures of late, beginning with sunny skies and temperatures hitting the mid-40s to 50s by the middle of the week.?

Kari Huus, NBC Staff Writer, contributed to this report.

Children's complex thinking skills begin before going to school

Jan. 23, 2013 ? New research at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows that children begin to show signs of higher-level thinking skills as young as age 4 ?. Researchers have previously attributed higher-order thinking development to knowledge acquisition and better schooling, but the new longitudinal study shows that other skills, not always connected with knowledge, play a role in the ability of children to reason analytically.

The findings, reported in January in the journal Psychological Science, show for the first time that children's executive function has a role in the development of complicated analytical thinking. Executive function includes such complex skills as planning, monitoring, task switching, and controlling attention. High, early executive function skills at school entry are related to higher than average reasoning skills in adolescence.

Growing research suggests that executive function may be trainable through pathways, including preschool curriculum, exercise and impulse control training. Parents and teachers may be able to help encourage development of executive function by having youngsters help plan activities, learn to stop, think, and then take action, or engage in pretend play, said lead author of the study, Lindsey Richland, assistant professor in comparative human development at the University of Chicago.

Although important to a child's education, "little is known about the cognitive mechanisms underlying children's development of the capacity to engage in complex forms of reasoning," Richland said.

The new research is reported in the paper "Early Executive Function Predicts Reasoning Development" and follows the development of complex reasoning in children from before the time they go to school until they are 15. Richland's co-author is Margaret Burchinal, senior scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The two studied the acquisition of analogical thinking, one form of complex reasoning. "The ability to see relationships and similarities between disparate phenomena is fundamental to analytical and inductive reasoning, and is closely related to measurements of general fluid intelligence," said Richland. Developing complex reasoning ability is particularly fundamental to the innovation and adaptive thinking skills necessary for a modern workforce, she pointed out.

Richland and Burchinal studied a database of 1,364 children who were part of the Early Child Care and Youth Development study from birth through age 15. The group was fairly evenly divided between boys and girls and included families from a diverse cross-section of ethnic and income backgrounds.

The current study examined tests children took when they were 4 ?, when they were in first grade, third grade, and when they were 15. Because the study was longitudinal, the same children were tested at each interval. Among the tests they took were ones to measure analytical reasoning, executive function, vocabulary knowledge, short-term memory and sustained attention.

Children were tested at 4 ? on their ability to monitor and control their automatic responses to stimuli. In first grade they worked on a test that judged their ability to move objects in a "Tower of Hanoi" game, in which they had to move disks between pegs in a specific order.

In third grade and at 15 year olds, they were tested on their ability to understand analogies, asked in third grade for instance to complete the question "dog is to puppy as cat is to__?" At 15 year olds, they were asked to complete written tests of analogies.

The study found a strong relationship between high scores among children who, as preschoolers, had strong vocabularies and were good at monitoring and controlling their responses to later ability on tests of understanding analogies.

"Overall, these results show that knowledge is necessary for using thinking skills, as shown by the importance of early vocabulary, but also inhibitory control and executive function skills are important contributors to children's analytical reasoning development," Richland said.

The National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation supported the research.

Apple Retail Stores Averaged $1.25M In Revenue Per Week For Q1 2013

384110205_fc63c524a0_zAs we learn more about Apple’s Q1 in 2013, we’ve found out some interesting facts about Apple’s retail stores. The company says that it has opened 401 stores total, with four new ones in China alone. The average revenue per store is $1.25 million per week, compared to $1.22 million last year. It’s no secret that Apple has unlocked something very special in its retail stores. They’re all arranged basically the same way, and the experience is something similar to walking into a Starbucks. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be able to find people wearing similar clothing, knowledgable in the same way and very happy to take your money. I’ve never been pressured to buy something, and I’ve found that every single time I ask a question, it’s answered quickly and in a way that I can understand. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how much money you have or how many Apple products you currently own, its retail employees treat everyone the same way. I’d love to see numbers on how many repeat customers its retail stores have, because it wouldn’t surprise me if people were to have an affinity for specific stores and staff members due to this comfortable environment that Apple fosters.
